DARIEN, Conn. – January is “Radon Awareness Month” and the Darien Health Department is offering free radon test kits so residents can test their homes.

Radon is considered by the Centers for Disease Control and the Environmental Protection Agency to be the second leading cause of lung cancer.

Darien Health Director David Knauf said that winter is the best time to test for radon because the house is closed up. If you have elevated levels of radon, it is easy and relatively inexpensive to fix.

Radon kits can be picked up in the office of the Darien Health Department, located in Town Hall, Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
